Sarcoma Los Angeles

sarcomaA sarcoma (from the Greek sarx meaning “flesh”) is a cancer that arises from transformed cells in one of a number of tissues that develop from embryonicmesoderm. Thus, sarcomas include tumors of bone, cartilage, fat, muscle, vascular, and hematopoietic tissues. (This is in contrast to carcinomas, which originate from epithelial cells and thus give rise to more common malignancies, such as breast, colon, and lung cancer.)

“To our knowledge, this is the first randomized phase 3 trial to show that regional hyperthermia increases the benefit of chemotherapy. Adding regional hyperthermia to chemotherapy is a new effective treatment strategy for patients with high-risk STS (Soft Tissue Sarcom), including STS with an abdominal or retroperitoneal location.” .

“The treatment response rate in the group that received regional hyperthermia was 28.8%, compared with 12.7% in the group who received chemotherapy alone (p=0.002)”.
